Acquired Brain Injuries Rehabilitation in St. Catharines

What is an Acquired Brain Injury?

An acquired brain injury (ABI) refers to damage to the brain that occurs after birth, typically as a result of trauma, illness, or other medical conditions. Unlike congenital brain injuries, ABIs are caused by external factors such as traumatic head injuries, strokes, infections, or lack of oxygen. These injuries can lead to various physical, cognitive, and emotional impairments, often requiring long-term rehabilitation and care.

At LV Physiotherapy in St. Catharines, our Neuro-Physiotherapists specialize in the treatment and rehabilitation of acquired brain injuries, offering personalized plans to help individuals regain their function and independence.

Causes of Acquired Brain Injury

Common causes of Acquired Brain Injury

Acquired brain injuries can result from a wide range of causes, including:

  • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI): Often caused by falls, car accidents, or sports-related injuries that result in a direct impact on the head.
  • Stroke: A leading cause of acquired brain injuries, strokes occur when blood flow to the brain is disrupted, resulting in damage to brain cells.
  • Anoxia or Hypoxia: A lack of oxygen supply to the brain due to conditions like cardiac arrest or near-drowning incidents.
  • Infections: Severe infections such as meningitis or encephalitis can also lead to significant brain damage.
  • Toxic Exposure: Exposure to harmful substances like carbon monoxide can result in neurological damage.

At LV Physiotherapy, we provide rehabilitation for a variety of ABI causes, serving the St. Catharines community with compassionate, expert care to support recovery.

I have been having physiotherapy at LV Physiotherapy since my stroke a couple of years ago. From the receptionists to the therapy staff, everyone I’ve been in contact with has been friendly and knowledgeable. The programs are designed for my individual needs. As my progress changes, so do my exercises….they are tweaked for my needs. I am also responsible to do as many of these routines as possible, at home between my scheduled visits. My progress seems slow to me, but it is steady. When I started I was being driven by my wife and I was using a cane. Now, the cane is no longer needed, and I arrive alone, as I have also gotten my driver’s licence back! Thank you Lisa and staff!
