Dry Needling St. Catharines
What is Functional Dry Needling?
Functional Dry Needling (FDN) is a safe and highly effective technique used at LV Physiotherapy to treat chronic pain and acute pain caused by muscle tension. FDN is a therapeutic technique to target “trigger points” or taut bands of tissue within muscles that may be causing pain or dysfunction.
When performing Functional Dry Needling, a sterile, small, thin filament needle is inserted through the skin into the underlying affected tendons, ligaments or muscles. It is used to stimulate the soft tissue for pain relief and to significantly improve function.
Functional Dry Needling has been proven to treat a wide variety of musculoskeletal injuries including overuse injuries, neck pain, headaches, back pain, sciatica, muscle spasms, muscle strains, tendinitis, hip pain, knee pain, tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow and much more.

Is Functional Dry Needling Different from Acupuncture?
FDN is very different from acupuncture. The only similarity between the two is the solid filament needle that is used. Functional Dry Needling is a form of treatment strongly supported by western medical philosophy. Functional Dry Needling is used as an adjunct to other various forms of treatment options that your physiotherapist will use to optimize your recovery.
Why should I choose Functional Dry Needling?
A wide range of conditions and injuries can be treated with Functional Dry Needling (FDN). When FDN is paired with traditional exercise-based Physiotherapy treatments and advanced hands-on manual therapy, we see significant improvements in pain and return to activity.
At LV Physiotherapy, your St. Catharines Physiotherapist will conduct a comprehensive assessment prior to administering Functional Dry Needling to determine if it is the best treatment for you.
Does Functional Dry Needling Hurt?
Most patients report feeling little to no discomfort while undergoing Functional Dry Needling treatments.
At LV Physiotherapy, our Physiotherapists are highly-trained to administer this technique and will make the process as painless as possible. However, some patients may still experience discomfort with a “twitch response” in the muscle when the needle is inserted. This discomfort is comparable to a quick muscle cramp or ache. There may also be some muscle soreness within the first 24-48 hours following a Functional Dry Needling treatment session.
